MEMBERSHIP OPTIONS
Professional excavators and contractors can join O.U.P.S. through our special contractor membership option.
In February of 1996 the O.U.P.S. Board of Trustees unanimously approved a provision to allow contractors (individuals whose main course of business is excavation) to join as O.U.P.S. members and to participate in its meetings. Previously, board seats were reserved for utility operators only.
This new partnership occurred as a result of O.U.P.S.' efforts to enhance the participation and increase the safety awareness of underground damage prevention of contractors in the industry. Such a positive alliance further supports the O.U.P.S. mission.
This membership also allows one contractor (voted on by the contractor members) to fill one guaranteed position of the O.U.P.S Board of Trustees. Currently, the contractor elected to hold the trustee seat is; Joe Igel, Vice President of Safety for the George J. Igel & Co., Inc., a Columbus-based Site Development Company where he is responsible for all risk and loss management and project safety. Managing safety since 1996, he is also responsible for numerous compliance and regulatory issues including workers' compensation, DOT, PUCO, OHSA and other related agencies.
His organizational involvement includes: The Builders Exchange of Central Ohio, BWC, All Ohio Safety Congress Construction Committee, Ohio Utilities Protection Service, Ohio Contractors Association, Tri-Village Sertoma, Greater Columbus Damage Prevention Council and Ohio Operating Engineers Apprenticeship Committee.
Here are just a few of the many benefits of becoming an O.U.P.S. contractor member:
- Participate in O.U.P.S.' organizational direction and strategy
- Stakeholder representation on O.U.P.S.' Board of Trustees
- Ability to network your organization and services
- Informative membership mailings
- Complementary access to O.U.P.S.' public education programs and supporting materials
