811
Introducing 811… another way to call before you dig
In March 2005, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) designated "811" as the nationwide call before you dig number. At that time, the FCC gave states approximately two years to implement 811 dialing capabilities. As of May 2007, 811 dialing is fully functional throughout Ohio.
With 811, the FCC hopes that more people will remember to call before they dig. Whether you're in Ohio or Oregon, the number to call is always the same.
Dial 811 or 1-800-362-2764—it's your choice!
Keep in mind that 811 does NOT replace O.U.P.S.' current call before you dig number, 1-800-362-2764. Just think of 811 as another way to contact us.
Homeowners, contractors and excavators can call either number at anytime to get their lines marked. If you dial 811, your call will be forwarded to an existing one-call notification center. O.U.P.S.' one-call process will remain the same, and we will continue to notify our members who own and operate underground facilities in the area in which you plan to dig.
Always call before you dig—It's the Law!
Remember, safe digging means calling 811 or 1-800-362-2764 before ANY type of landscape or excavation work. Lines have been hit digging, such things as, fence post holes, anchoring supports for decks and swing sets, planting trees, removing tree roots and driving landscaping stakes into the ground. By not calling, you're not only breaking the law, but also risking injury to yourself, your family or work crew and the surrounding community.
