LEGISLATIVE UPDATES
O.U.P.S. is committed to working closely with legislators to help keep our state safe. With your support, we can increase our legislative presence and ensure a secure, productive digging environment for all.

The Law
By law, everyone MUST contact O.U.P.S., 1-800-362-2764, at least 48 hours but no more than 10 working days (excluding weekends and legal holidays) before beginning any digging or excavation work. This regulation applies to smaller projects too, including, but not limited to, digging fencepost holes, anchoring supports for decks and swing sets, planting trees, removing tree roots and driving landscaping stakes into the ground.

Current legislative issues
• Nationwide launch of 811
The May 1, 2007, the Common Ground Alliance hosted a nationwide campaign launch of 811, the federally mandated, national call before you dig access number. Working closely with the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio, O.U.P.S. has recently implemented 811 calling capabilities!

• Ohio Revised Code Update
Another equally important issue is the Ohio Revised Code, which dictates underground infrastructure protection in Ohio. Unfortunately, with its outdated mandates and information, the code does not reflect the current state of our environment and the needs and concerns of Ohio's consumers, utility companies and underground facility owners.
